Construction workers renovating a building in Belgium uncovered a concealed cache of gold estimated to be worth over $10 million.
The workers discovered approximately 50 gold bars and stacks of gold coins while performing renovation work on a property in Dendermonde, East Flanders.
The workers promptly notified authorities after discovering what they referred to as “a large quantity of gold.”
Belgian media reported that the stash, valued at approximately €9 million ($10.4 million), was concealed within the cellar walls of a residence owned by CAW East-Flanders, a local charity.
One of the workers, known only as Kobe, informed Belgian broadcaster VRT that the discovery initially left the construction crew in shock.
“Our initial response was one of disbelief and astonishment,” he stated.
Kobe mentioned that the workers discovered the treasure while performing groundwork to install a pipe for the sewerage system.
“We certainly didn’t anticipate discovering gold,” he added.
After the discovery, authorities reported that the gold was cataloged and moved to a secure vault operated by Belgium’s federal government services.
The discovery has drawn the interest of aspiring treasure hunters, leading police to caution the public to avoid the fenced-off construction site.
“It seems that multiple treasure hunters are eager to return to the site,” stated the Dendermonde police in a Facebook post.
The department issued a caution to the inquisitive: “A valuable piece of advice: it is indeed futile.”
The legal ownership of the gold is still ambiguous, particularly regarding whether the charity that possesses the property or another entity might eventually assert a claim to the treasure.
Authorities expressed their optimism that the significant find would ultimately be placed in the appropriate hands.
