Ferrari Luce Electric Car Achieves Record $40 Million Sale at Charity Auction

Ferrari’s inaugural electric vehicle, Luce, achieves a remarkable sale price of $40 million at a charity auction, challenging prevailing doubts about the electric vehicle market.

Ferrari’s inaugural fully electric vehicle, a bespoke “tailor-made” edition of the Luce, has achieved a remarkable sale price of $40 million at a charity auction, establishing a new record for a car sold at auction.

The bespoke Ferrari Luce was sold by Sotheby’s during Monterey Car Week in California, with the auction house characterizing the vehicle as a “unrepeatable opportunity” to acquire the first production chassis of Ferrari’s Luce program.

The one-off model showcases a distinctive semi-gloss finish and an array of specially commissioned components through Ferrari’s exclusive “tailor-made” personalization program, enabling customers to tailor vehicles to their exact specifications.

Sotheby’s has chosen not to reveal the identity of the successful bidder. Proceeds from the sale are set to be donated to Ferrari’s foundation, which supports educational programs.

The record-breaking sale occurs nearly three months after Ferrari introduced the Luce, its first fully electric production car, which has a starting price of 550,000 euros, or approximately $640,000.

The launch marked a notable shift for the Italian luxury sports carmaker, especially as other high-performance brands, such as Porsche and Lamborghini, have reduced or reevaluated their electric vehicle strategies in light of lower-than-anticipated demand.

Ferrari’s unveiling of the Luce initially sparked a negative response in financial markets, as analysts highlighted worries regarding the vehicle’s design and the company’s high share price prior to the launch.

Despite the initial market skepticism, the $40 million auction result highlights the strong demand among collectors for rare and highly personalized Ferrari models, especially the first production example of a significant new chapter in the marque’s history.
