Black Panther 3 has announced David Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s grown son, with the film scheduled for release in December 2028
Ryan Coogler has confirmed that David Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s grown son in Black Panther 3, which is set to premiere in cinemas worldwide in December 2028.
Director Ryan Coogler has revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that Black Panther 3 is set to premiere in cinemas on 15 December 2028, featuring David Jonsson in the role of T’Challa’s grown son, a character first introduced in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Coogler states that T’Challa matures in the new film, with aspirations for the throne of Wakanda. The filmmaker disclosed that Black Panther 3 will be the inaugural Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be filmed entirely on large-format celluloid film.
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is included in the cast, as previously stated.
Released in 2018, Black Panther achieved over $1.3 billion in global box office revenue and secured three Academy Awards. The film elevated Chadwick Boseman to global stardom as he portrayed Wakanda’s king and protector, T’Challa. Boseman passed away from cancer in August 2020, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever delved into the repercussions of his character’s death. The 2022 sequel achieved $859 million in global box office revenue and secured an Academy Award for Ruth E. Carter’s costume design, marking her as the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
Jonsson is familiar with Hall H, having attended Comic-Con for two recent films, The Long Walk, directed by Francis Lawrence, and Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez. During the panel, Coogler introduced the actor by emphasizing his performance in The Long Walk, where he stars alongside Cooper Hoffman in the Stephen King adaptation about two young men who develop an unexpected friendship during a perilous endurance contest.
Coogler was accompanied on stage by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, along with returning Black Panther stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, as well as Jonsson. His character, Toussaint, also referred to as T’Challa II, was introduced by Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which ended with Rihanna’s Oscar-nominated song “Lift Me Up.”
In addition to the Marvel franchise, Jonsson has portrayed Gus Sackey in HBO’s Industry and took on the role of Dom in the highly praised 2023 romantic comedy Rye Lane.
