Michael B. Jordan is negotiating to appear in the next film “Miami Vice”
The 38-year-old actor has been connected to the project for several months, but according to sources who spoke to Deadline, he didn’t get an official offer to play Detective Ricardo Tubbs until this week. This was because Universal shifted the film’s shooting date to later in 2026, which would allow the Sinners star to complete post-production work on directing The Thomas Crown Affair.
According to insiders, Michael was “blown away” by the most recent draft of the Miami Vice script, even though a deal is still pending.
For the role of Sonny Crockett, Tubbs’ detective partner, the studio is still seeking a co-star.
Tom Gun: Miami Vice, a remake of the classic 1980s television series about undercover police officers battling drug dealers, will be directed by avant-garde director Joseph Kosinski.
Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas played undercover police agents Crockett and Tubbs in the first season of the show, which was produced by Anthony Yerkovich and aired on NBC from 1984 until 1990.
The pair, who were well-known for their fast automobiles and pastel clothes, had a significant influence on pop culture at the time.
Executive producer Michael Mann later directed a 2006 film adaptation of the five-season series, which starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
The film version was a box office failure, earning $165 million on a $135 million budget, even though it became a cult favorite over time.
Mann previously discussed how the success of the original program and the creation of the world the characters lived in depended heavily on the clothing.
“[Crockett and Tubbs] were posing as imposters trapping drug traffickers, wealthy buyers, or anybody with some stature,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter last year.
They needed to put on a front in order to be successful in the entire drug trade.
Thus, they had access to these vehicles, boats, aircraft, and clothing. This is a regular practice of the DEA.
Mann, meanwhile, remembered that the figures and their attire were “political.”
“That’s the most important thing about the show,” he continued.
It’s crucial to note that a large number of the casting choices were deliberate attacks on gender and racial stereotypes.
“The fact that Tubbs is dressed the way he is, that he is a Republican and not a liberal, or that he is far more intelligent and sophisticated than Crockett is not coincidental.”
The current release date for Miami Vice is August 6, 2027.
