Lizzo Faces Legal Action for Violation of Copyright
Lizzo has been sued for copyright theft over a track that hasn’t been released yet.
The singer of “About Damn Time” used a part of the song in question on a TikTok video this summer. In it, she sang about Sydney Sweeney’s famous American Eagle ad, saying, “B****, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney.”
In a new file made on October 21, Georgia-based rights holder GRC Trust says that Lizzo copied parts of Sam Dees’s 1970s soul song Win or Lose (We Tried).
Jimmy Ginn is named as the owner of the printing rights.
The complainant says that the 13-second preview on social media was enough publicity to hold her responsible, even though she hasn’t made any money from the track yet because it hasn’t been released.
According to the GRC Trust, they tried to make a deal with the Juice singer but “reached an impasse,” which is why this case was filed.
In answer, Lizzo’s lawyers said, “We are shocked that the GRC Trust brought this case.” Just so everyone knows, the song has never been sold or used to make money, and there has been no choice made yet about when it will be sold again.
Lizzo recently said she was “stressing out” about streaming algorithms because she thought her fans “didn’t even know” she put out new music.
The pop star released the mixtape My Face Hurts From Smiling last month, which has 13 tracks and features guest appearances by SZA and Doja Cat. However, Lizzo said she was worried about the “shambles” of the music business because her new albums don’t seem to be getting to her fans.
This is what she wrote on TikTok: “The music business is a mess right now, and you can use that to your advantage…” In the past, the music business used algorithms a lot, just like every other business. However, the music business was managed to some degree.
“People are really stressed out because they can’t change the algorithm now that we live in the digital streaming age.” That includes me…
“Every big artist except Beyoncé has released music this year or plans to release music this year.”
“I added the deluxe to my mixtape today.” Still, some people don’t know I dropped music.
“Every big artist this year, from Lady Gaga to Drake, has put out an album, but everyone is saying there’s no song of the summer,” she said.
“I’m going to tell you the truth.” It’s not because the music isn’t great. It’s because of how the system is set up that no one can serve a lot of people anymore.
“This business used to be all about serving a lot of people, like getting your song played on a lot of different TV and radio stations.”
“There wasn’t so much stuff on the internet.” Back in the day, there was a clear way for big artists to get their songs out there and reach a lot of people.
She also said that TikTok’s “For You” page is great for new acts, but she thinks that bigger stars are missing out.
