Cardi B explains why it took seven years to release her second album
Cardi B is “very picky,” which is why she waited seven years to release her second album.
Cardi B has now acknowledged that there was a lengthy lag between the rapper’s first album, Invasion of Privacy, which was released in 2018, and her follow-up, Am I the Drama?, which is finally scheduled to be released later this month. This was because she wanted to make sure every song was perfect and found it difficult to choose just a few songs.
“I always knew that I was going to drop a second album, but I just didn’t have a project well put together,” she told Billboard.
When WAP and Up came out [in 2020 and 2021, respectively], my fans said, ‘Oh, you should have put a project together,’ but I only had four tracks that I liked.
“At the time, I didn’t have an album finished. I’m not the type of person who plans to finish an album in two months. I have very specific tastes in music.
“I want to release this entire project because I have a lot of songs,” she continued. I had 60 songs recorded. I’m a different person every other day and I have a change of heart [about everything].
“I hope you don’t change your mind about your songs,” my team usually says. “Nope,” I say. I’m settled.
Additionally, Cardi B stated that her live performances generate more revenue than her recordings, but she still didn’t want to rush her second release in order to profit from a tour.
“Many people say that I became comfortable because I make money, but the most money I make is when I go and do shows,” she clarified.
“I could release my music quickly and earn millions of dollars per event, but that isn’t the point. Great music is what I want. I hope it’s fantastic.
Am I the drama? includes her two most recent singles, Outside and Imaginary Playerz, which includes a sample of Jay-Z’s 1997 smash Imaginary Player, along with 23 other tracks, such as WAP and Up.
September 19 is when the new album is scheduled to be released.
