The last name of Ciara’s son’s future appears to be a source of some confusion

The fact that the 11-year-old was being called “Future Wilson” left some shocked.

Ciara, along with her two oldest children, Future, 11, and Sienna, 8, will be attending the US Open in New York City this week, joining a number of other celebs.

Russell Wilson, the husband, made sure to show his wife and children his love on social media on Thursday, September 4, by reposting an Instagram story from Vogue that showed the family watching a tennis match.

The NFL player wrote, “Mrs. @ciara Wilson, Future Wilson, and Sienna Wilson [3 heart-eye emojis]” as the description for the repost. Some started to wonder about Future’s last name because Wilson is his stepfather and musician Nayvadius “Future” Wilburn is his biological father, even if the majority saw it as merely a token of affection.

@waymoflydenu posted on X/Twitter, “Russ calling him ‘Future Wilson’ was petty and nobody can tell me differently.” It is not necessary to compete if you are involved in a child’s life. Your behavior will demonstrate to the youngster who is truly involved and who is not. That post was cheesy.

Additionally, this gave many people the impression that Ciara had legally changed young Future’s last name from Wilburn to Wilson.

@inezalbright2 wrote, “The only people who agree with this are bitter BMs,” expressing disagreement with the notion. Although my child had a stepfather as well, she still kept her original father’s name. It was that man, not my child, whom I married.

But as TMZ notes, the 39-year-old CiCi singer did change her oldest son’s last name years ago, adding Wilson to Wilburn but leaving his given name unchanged. Thus, Future Zahir Wilburn Wilson would be his complete name.

As a result, young Future can maintain a relationship with his biological father while sharing the same last name as his household.

In an episode of the I AM ATHLETE podcast from February 2024, Russell, 36, talked about taking on the role of father to young Future. He said he realized it was his responsibility after falling in love with his R&B star mother.

“Being able to step in and raise a child with [Ciara] and knowing that, ‘Oh God, I know she’s the one for me.'” But I’m also going to accept this duty. Wilson spoke of bringing up Future. “I was prepared for that.” A wonderful gift. The best gift of raising Future [Jr.], Sienna, Win, and now Amora has been that. God gave me the chance to raise them, love them, and take care of them, or something like that. Additionally, nothing has changed.
