The Wizard of Oz tale is turned into a scary movie

L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was the basis for the low-budget movie directed by Aaron Mirtes.

Dorothy Gale is stuck in a harsh land where she faces death everywhere she goes, according to a script that Mirtes and Nathan Illsley wrote based on an idea by James Cullen Bressack and Scotty Mullen.

The movie summary says that Dorothy (Kenzie Wynne), who is swept away by a freak tornado, ends up in the evil world of Oz, where she meets Glinda, a hungry witch who now has more Munchkin meat to eat.

They will also meet a Scarecrow that breaks skulls, a Tin Man whose hobby is collecting hearts that are still beating, and a Cowardly Lion that pleases his master by tearing anyone he sees apart.

By using scavenged weapons, Dorothy fights her way through waves of crazy enemies until she finally meets her ultimate enemy, the Wicked of Oz.

Other actors in the scary comedy are Patrick Sharn as The Wizard, Destinee Monét as Toto, Zach Lazar Hoffman as The Cowardly Lion, Brad Belemjian as The Scarecrow, and Carson Butcher as The Tin Man.

For November 2025, Bressack, Tom Malloy, and Niccolo Messina, CEO of independent film company Insurgence, will release The Wicked of Oz.

Messina said, “The experienced writers and producers behind Wicked of Oz—James Cullen Bressack, Scotty Mullen, Tom Malloy, and Aaron Mirtes—have worked on everything from Mel Gibson action thrillers to Sharknado.”

“Our wickedly talented cast, the movie has no songs or rainbows—just a lot of blood and bodies falling from the sky over Oz.” For gore fans, it’s fierce fun.

In the 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland, who would later become a Hollywood star, played Dorothy who gets lost. Nowadays, Victor Fleming’s singing movie is still getting new fans.

The movie Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the 2003 musical by Stephen Schwartz and Tony Holzman, was a big hit in 2024.

As a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked follows college friends Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda Upland (Ariana Grande) to the Land of Oz before Dorothy Gale’s arrival from Kansas.

Focuses on their friendship before Elphaba turns into the Wicked Witch of the West.

Coming out in November 2025 is Wicked: For Good, the follow up to the first movie.
