AI Company Perplexity Challenges Tech Giant’s Dominance with a Startling $34.5B Bid for Google Chrome

AI startup Perplexity calls for greater user safety and free online access in their proposal to take over Google Chrome.

Perplexity, an artificial intelligence start-up, has made an unexpected proposal of $34.5 billion (£25.6 billion) to purchase Google’s Chrome browser, threatening the tech giant’s hegemony and promoting what it describes as a more user-focused internet future.

Citing pledges to user safety, open web principles, and increased choice, Perplexity contended in a letter to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai that putting Chrome under an independent operator would “benefit the public.”

However, several industry professionals have expressed skepticism about the offer. Heath Ahrens, a technology investor, called the deal a “stunt,” pointing out that it is far less than Chrome’s projected value, especially considering the browser’s enormous user base and data repositories. With over three billion users globally, Chrome is currently the most popular web browser.

There is no indication that Google intends to sell Chrome, and the firm has not publicly responded to the offer. A federal judge is anticipated to render a decision this month that may potentially compel Google to restructure or spin off portions of its business, including Chrome, as the internet company is currently defending itself in two significant US antitrust cases.

According to Google, doing so would hurt users and compromise online security. The idea of splitting out Chrome was previously referred to as a “unprecedented proposal” by a representative.

In contrast, Perplexity has stated that it would maintain Google as Chrome’s default search engine while allowing users to modify their choices. Additionally, the business promised to keep supporting Chromium, the open-source browser architecture that underpins Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Chrome.

The start-up has not revealed how it will finance the planned transaction; it was last valued at $18 billion in July. Nevertheless, Perplexity claims that their offer is a daring pledge to “user choice and continuity” for Chrome’s sizable user base.

With the recent release of Comet, its own AI-powered browser, Perplexity has established itself as a major force in the AI market, going up against industry titans like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It also made news earlier this year when it offered to buy TikTok’s US business, which might be banned if not sold by September.

Some observers think a bigger offer from a well-known individual like Elon Musk or Sam Altman might possibly tip the scales in the battles for browsers and artificial intelligence, even though many doubt the seriousness of Perplexity’s offer.
