Musk claims that xAI will sue Apple for its ranking practices in the App Store

Elon Musk has declared that his artificial intelligence firm, xAI, intends to sue Apple for allegedly engaging in bias in App Store rankings.

Apple has been accused of violating antitrust laws by manipulating App Store rankings, according to billionaire Elon Musk, who has stated that his artificial intelligence business, xAI, will file a lawsuit against the industry leader.

“Apple’s actions are clearly antitrust violations because they prevent any AI business other than OpenAI from ranking #1 in the App Store. “xAI will take immediate legal action,” Musk wrote on Monday on his social media account, X.

Musk provided no supporting evidence for his assertion. When Reuters asked Apple, OpenAI, and xAI for comment, they did not immediately reply.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is presently the most popular free app for iPhones in the US, according to App Store data. Grok from xAI comes in fifth, and Google’s Gemini chatbot comes in 57th. Additionally, ChatGPT is the most popular app on the Google Play Store, according to analytics company Sensor Tower.

Apple and OpenAI currently collaborate to integrate ChatGPT into Macs, iPhones, and iPads.

Musk took aim at Apple in a previous post on Monday, writing: “Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to promote either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ area while X is the world’s top news app and Grok is the fifth-best app overall? Are you getting involved in politics?

Musk made these remarks as industry and governmental scrutiny of Apple’s App Store policies increased.

Apple was sent to federal prosecutors for a criminal contempt investigation in April after a US judge found the corporation in violation of a court order forcing it to allow more competition in its App Store. The lawsuit was launched by Epic Games, the company behind “Fortnite.”

The European Union’s antitrust watchdog penalized Apple €500 million ($587 million) that same month for allegedly violating the bloc’s Digital Markets Act by utilizing commercial and technological limitations to prevent app developers from referring consumers to less expensive alternatives outside the App Store.
