Chris Martin of Jamaica Receives a Reggae Music Award in New York City
Christopher Martin, a reggae sensation, was the focus of festivities at The Official People’s Ball, which took place in Queens, New York, on Saturday, August 9.
A night of music, awards, and cultural pride commemorated Jamaica’s 63rd Independence, and it was organized by the Jamaica Independence Foundation, Inc. (JIFINYC).
In a noteworthy move, New York City Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed August 9 to be “Christopher Martin Day” throughout the city, paying homage to the artist’s impact on Caribbean and reggae music.
Alongside official declarations from the New York State Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, Martin received the coveted Ambassador and Innovator of Reggae Music Award.
He was joined on stage by J. Lexy Brooks, President of JIFINYC; Chris Chin and Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin, executives from VP Records; and StacyMac, a well-known media personality and event co-host.
Following a significant appearance at Jamaica’s Grand Gala on August 6 at Kingston’s National Stadium, which also honored icons Beres Hammond, Capleton, and Leroy Sibbles, Martin performed a number of fan favorites during the festive evening.
Cities frequently designate a day in the name of significant individuals to celebrate their contributions to the arts, culture, or activism. For instance, on October 20, in Harlem, New York City, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o was celebrated with “Lupita Nyong’o Day,” which coincided with her Broadway debut in the highly regarded drama Eclipsed. Likewise, on May 2, Megan Thee Stallion Day was celebrated in Houston in honor of her charitable efforts during the epidemic and the winter disaster in Texas. In honor of the artists’ cultural impact, Minnesota declared May 23 to be “Beyoncé Day” and August 8 to be “Beyoncé and Jay-Z Day.” January 20, 2016, was declared “David Bowie Day” in New York City in honor of the last performance of his musical Lazarus. Additionally, on May 23, 2021, “Born This Way Day” was observed in Los Angeles to commemorate Lady Gaga and the tenth anniversary of her seminal album.
These accolades demonstrate how public officials utilize civic honors to highlight those who, like Christopher Martin, are continuing to have a lasting effect in their communities and beyond through advocacy and music.
