Tyla broke down in tears because she felt pressured to fit in with the pop
The Water hitmaker’s 2023 single went viral, but she acknowledges that she was forced to create music that wasn’t truly her own, which left her “crying.”
“[Those songs] didn’t feel like me at all,” the South African celebrity said to Variety. “Come down, we need to cut the song,” my management called me as I was in my hotel room. “This is not what I want,” I thought as I sobbed. I wasn’t hired to do this.
“They had to persuade me to leave that room.” However, doing so made me realize how much I adore African music. It strengthened my resolve to stick to my principles.
“I think back to recording Water, and I couldn’t have been more closed off to the outside world,” she said while discussing the recording of her breakout single.
The only people in the studio were my engineer, me, and his expectant wife. I was really shy once.
Tyla has said that she felt “trapped” after Water’s popularity.
The popularity of Water completely changed the 23-year-old singer’s life.
At an event in London, she recently told The Sun newspaper: “I felt so trapped for a while, especially last year.”
“Like, ‘Oh my word, I blew up, and now that the world is watching, I just need to have everything right and perfect.'”
“For me, it was a little stressful.”
Tyla just dropped her first mixtape, We Wanna Party, and she enjoyed the opportunity to “experiment” with different sounds and concepts.
“I wasn’t planning on doing this,” she clarified. At the beginning of the year, I was only creating songs. It was mostly for a record.
However, as summer approached, I realized that the songs I was writing were simply too excellent. Where are the songs for summer?
“We need some summer songs right now,” I said, because I’m simply too happy to keep them in my head. All I truly want is for people to hear it, celebrate it, and see how I’ve changed over the years and who I am now.
Tyla believes that she has been able to handle the pressures of the music business by maintaining “a little bit of arrogance.”
“I just always knew I had something in me,” she stated.
Knowing that this is the life I’m going to lead has always given me a sense of calm.
“I refuse to be constrained or placed in a box by anyone or anything. Maybe I’m just self-assured.
“I think everyone needs a little amount of arrogance, especially to succeed in this profession and convince people that your music is good. A lot of people complain that you’re arrogant.
“Why would anyone believe in your work as much as you do if you’re not that proud of it yourself?”
