Kenyan DJ Pierra Makena Discusses Fame, Career Pause, and Motherhood
Pierra Makena has been a major force in Kenya’s entertainment industry for about 20 years. She has done it everything, from starring in popular TV series to breaking through the male-dominated DJing industry.
She has accomplished it with audacity, determination, and unrepentant style. However, the 43-year-old celebrity is aiming for something different today: slowing down. And it has nothing to do with her fatigue. It’s because she’s making a decision for both herself and her daughter.
Motherhood has changed everything, according to the reality TV actress, who is the proud single mother of eight-year-old Ricca. In a special interview with Showmax, she revealed, “I’m very intentional about how I raise her.” “If a job doesn’t feel right for her, I even decline it.”
Her parenting decisions, particularly the one that exposes her child to the public view, are frequently the subject of criticism. Pierra, however, isn’t here for the commotion. She says, “Where were those opinions when we were struggling?” “Everyone has something to say now that she’s doing well.”
She acknowledges that when Ricca climbs a table, she can become extremely protective and frightened, but she is also dedicated to fostering her daughter’s uniqueness. “I’m in favor of her enjoying music if she does. She won’t be forced to become a doctor by me. The world we live in has changed.
Is there anything she wishes she had known before becoming a mother? She jokingly said, “That sleep is permanently cancelled.” You are awake all night when they are infants. You’re concerned when they’re teenagers. You’re worrying about their decisions when they turn 21. She wouldn’t swap it for anything, though, despite her weariness.
Pierra is ready to take a break after landing roles in major movies like “Tahidi High,” “Kina,” and “Disconnect,” DJing all over the world, and even appearing on reality TV on The Mommy Club NBO, which is presently available on Showmax. “I’m hoping to reduce my gigs so that I can concentrate on my family and myself,” she stated.
Exploring her softer side is part of that change; she hopes to take Ricca to Disney, see the Sound of Music set in Austria, and perhaps go skinny-dipping “somewhere no one knows me.” You can tell it’s more than a fantasy even though she laughs at the thought. It has to do with freedom.
In addition to revising professional objectives, Pierra is also changing the definition of success for women in their forties. “You don’t need a man to survive,” she says bluntly when discussing her experience as a single mother. I will not force a man to provide by taking him to court. I won’t plead with someone to look after the child I gave birth to. I prefer to hustle by myself.
Pierra admits that, in spite of her public image, she is an introvert. “People believe that because of my work, I thrive in the spotlight, but if I weren’t in the spotlight, I wouldn’t even be on social media.”
Pierra is choosing to live her life on her own terms as she welcomes this new chapter, but she isn’t abandoning her passions. One thing is evident whether she chooses to parent, DJ, perform, or decline a job in order to keep her child calm:
Pierra Makena is leveling up rather than slowing down.
