Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne has died at the age of 76. He died just weeks after giving an emotional farewell show with his former Black Sabbath partners.
That’s how his family felt when they said, “It is with more sadness than words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning.” His family was with him, and love was all around him.
Osbourne’s last show was on July 5 at Villa Park in Birmingham. He spoke to the 42,000 fans from a chair on stage and said, “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Metallica and Guns N’ Roses paid tributes at the “Back To The Beginning” show. It was also the first time in 20 years that Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—the original members of Black Sabbath—performed together.
Hugs and prayers have come from all over the music world. Metallica posted a picture of the band with Osbourne along with an emoji that looks like a broken heart. The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood said that the farewell show was a “lovely goodbye.” He was called one of the “funniest people” Sir Elton John had ever met and a “huge trailblazer.”
He was born John Michael Osbourne in Aston, Birmingham, on December 3, 1948. He became famous as the lead singer of Black Sabbath and was called the “Godfather of Heavy Metal” around the world. Classics like Iron Man, Paranoid, and War Pigs from the band’s 1970 debut record set the tone for a whole new genre. Osbourne later had success as a solo artist with records like “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman.”
His crazy personality and crazy things he did on stage, like biting the head off a bat while he was on stage, became the stuff of rock lore. He was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 because of his notorious wild behavior, but his solo career took off, winning him praise all over the world and millions of record sales.
In the early 2000s, he got more fans with The Osbournes, a reality show that showed his crazy family life in Los Angeles. Even though he had Parkinson’s disease and a lot of health problems in the past few years, he kept making surprise visits, like at the end of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
During his career, Osbourne won a lot of awards and honors, such as inductions into the UK and US Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, five Grammys, and a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Broad Street in Birmingham. He also won the Ivor Novello Award, the Godlike Genius award from NME, and the Living Legend award from Classic Rock.
There are many people who will miss Ozzy Osbourne. His wife Sharon, their children Aimee, Kelly, and Jack, his older children Jessica and Louis from his first marriage to Thelma Riley, and many grandkids. Fans all over the world are still sad about the death of a true star who had a huge impact on rock and heavy metal.
