Barrick Gold threatens to halt operations in Mali due to export restrictions
The company Barrick Gold (ABX.TO), opens new tab, said on Monday that it will stop doing business in Mali if gold shipments are still held up. This is because it is having trouble reaching a deal with Mali’s authorities on a new mining code.
Barrick said that things have “deteriorated significantly” at the gold miner’s Loulo-Gounkoto complex. He also said that workers have been jailed without a reason and that shipments of bullion have been stopped.
“If shipments remain suspended, Barrick will be compelled to suspend operations, further impacting the viability of this critical economic driver for Mali,” the firm said.
