Sweden has dismissed the rape charge against Mbappe, according to her attorney

Swedish prosecutors have withdrawn their investigation into the rape and sexual assault of French soccer player Kylian Mbappe, according to the player’s attorney on Thursday.

The striker for Real Madrid and France’s national team has denied any involvement in the case over alleged events that occurred on October 10 at a hotel in downtown Stockholm.

Prosecutors announced Thursday they have halted their investigation into the alleged events in Stockholm because of inadequate evidence, although they have not publicly identified the suspect in the case.

“I confirm,” Mbappe’s attorney, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, texted in response to a question from Reuters about whether the Swedish soccer player’s probe was shut down.

Canu-Bernard stated that she will address the issue later on Thursday.

“During the course of the investigation, there has been a designated person suspected on reasonable grounds of rape and two cases of sexual assault,” Swedish Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakova said in a statement earlier.

“But my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed,” she continued.

The prosecutor dropped the case when the claimed victim chose not to continue, according to Swedish court papers that Reuters was able to access.

“The plaintiff no longer wishes to participate in the investigation, so the evidence secured in the investigation is not in itself sufficient to complete the preliminary investigation,” Chirakova said in a judgment sent to the Stockholm District Court.
The plaintiff’s attorney remained silent.

Chirakova said that the inquiry had proceeded as usual.

According to her, the “designated person” in the case had not been informed that they were a murder suspect.

In October, the Swedish public broadcaster SVT and the daily newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet stated that Mbappe was the case’s suspect, citing anonymous sources.

At the time, Mbappe’s defenders claimed that the accusations were “totally false” and “a slanderous rumor.”

After the Swedish prosecuting authorities made its pronouncement on Thursday, Mbappe’s team, Real Madrid, declared that they would not comment on the situation. When Reuters reached out to his PR company for comment, they did not immediately reply.
