Off Tunisia, a migrant boat sinks, leaving at least nine people dead and six missing
Nine migrants’ remains have been found by Tunisia’s coast guard, while six more remain unaccounted for after their boat capsized off the country’s coast, according to a court official on Thursday. This is the most recent migrant boat tragedy in the Mediterranean.
Due to terrible weather, the boat broke down and took on water, and the Coast Guard has rescued 27 passengers thus far. Testimonies from survivors indicate that the boat was carrying at least forty-two passengers when it went down.
At least six migrants who were on the boat when it drowned off the coast of Chebba are being sought, Judge Farid Ben Jha told Reuters.
All of the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were on the boat.
Amidst an unparalleled migration crisis, Tunisia has supplanted Libya as the primary departure point for individuals from other parts of Africa who are looking to migrate to Europe in search of a better life.
