Nigeria loses power after the grid fails, power companies say
Nigeria’s national grid failed on Wednesday, causing a nationwide outage of energy, according to the nation’s power distribution firms.
Nigeria’s grid is prone to failure and has collapsed partially or completely at least ten times this year, mostly as a result of power installation failures and vandalism.
In separate announcements, Nigerian distribution firms, or “Discos,” reported that the system had failed at around 1233 GMT and that they believed power would be restored shortly.
Before the system collapse, energy generation was 3,087 megawatts; as of 1400 GMT, it had dropped to zero, according to data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
