Microsoft’s record $450 billion market value following blowout earnings alleviates concerns about AI investment
Microsoft has achieved a remarkable increase of $450 billion in market value following impressive earnings and a strong outlook for Azure, alleviating investor worries regarding AI spending.
On Thursday, Microsoft achieved a remarkable milestone by adding nearly $450 billion to its market value, marking the largest single-day gain ever recorded by a publicly traded company. This surge followed the release of stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings and a positive outlook for its Azure cloud business.
The shares of the technology giant experienced a remarkable increase of over 15% by the end of trading, raising its market capitalisation to around $3.35 trillion and surpassing Nvidia’s former record for the largest one-day market value gain of $441 billion, established on April 9, 2025, as reported by Reuters, referencing LSEG data.
The rally came after Microsoft reported financial results that exceeded expectations, showcasing robust performance in its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors. The company projected strong growth for Azure and indicated ongoing solid cash generation, reassuring investors that its significant investments in AI infrastructure are starting to yield results.
Investor concerns had increased in recent months regarding whether Microsoft’s significant investments in AI data centers and cloud infrastructure would yield adequate returns. Thursday’s earnings, however, alleviated those concerns, with cloud and AI operations rising as the company’s main growth drivers.
Microsoft anticipates a 45% increase in Azure revenue on a constant-currency basis for the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year, surpassing the 40.92% growth that analysts had projected, as reported by Visible Alpha data. The outlook indicated that the demand for AI-powered cloud services is on the rise.
The company has upheld its capital expenditure plans, forecasting an expenditure of $50 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and around $175 billion for the entire 2026 calendar year, highlighting its dedication to enhancing AI infrastructure.
After the earnings release, a minimum of nine brokerages elevated their price targets for Microsoft’s stock, with the average target rising to $560.90, as reported by Reuters.
The market reaction signified a notable shift for Microsoft, whose shares had been among the least robust performers within the so-called “Magnificent Seven” technology stocks this year. Before Thursday’s rally, the company’s stock had decreased by over 18% in 2026.
The most recent results are regarded as the most compelling endorsement of Microsoft’s long-term AI strategy to date.
The company has made substantial investments in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure since establishing its partnership with OpenAI in 2019, with a notable increase in those investments after the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022.
Earlier, Microsoft pledged a historic $30 billion for AI-driven cloud expansion in the third quarter of 2025, a decision that drew attention from analysts who raised concerns about whether customer demand would match the magnitude of the investment.
Recently, Microsoft revealed intentions to reduce approximately 2.1% of its global workforce while simultaneously ramping up AI-related capital expenditure, which has attracted criticism from certain industry observers. The most recent earnings, however, suggest that those investments are starting to yield the financial returns the company had expected.
In addition to its cloud infrastructure, Microsoft is broadening its enterprise AI solutions.
Earlier this month, the company announced the launch of the Microsoft Frontier Company, a new venture backed by $2.5 billion in funding aimed at assisting large organizations in identifying, deploying, and integrating AI technologies from various providers.
The initiative will initially cater to companies such as Unilever and Novo Nordisk, offering AI solutions customized to their business requirements while assisting them in attaining measurable returns on investment.
