Ghent University has suspended an academic who expressed concerns regarding Jason Arday

Nathan Cofnas, who brought attention to plagiarism issues concerning the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday, reports that Ghent University has suspended him in light of the controversy.

Academic Nathan Cofnas reports that Belgium’s Ghent University has suspended him after he previously expressed concerns regarding plagiarism allegations involving the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday.

Cofnas revealed the update on Thursday in a post on X, indicating that the university had suspended him and implying that he might ultimately lose his position.

“Ghent University has suspended me, and it is highly likely that they will terminate my employment,” Cofnas wrote.

At the time of reporting, Ghent University had not yet provided a response to the request for comment.

Cofnas publicly questioned the allegations related to Arday’s academic work, highlighting the controversy surrounding the late Cambridge professor.

Arday, recognized as the youngest Black professor at Cambridge University, was discovered deceased last Friday after enduring weeks of public examination regarding allegations related to his academic work.

Arday dismissed allegations of plagiarism while also recognizing that errors had occurred.

His death has since heightened public focus on the allegations and the wider controversy surrounding his academic career.

Nonetheless, the rationale behind Cofnas’ reported suspension is still ambiguous, and there is no evidence that Ghent University has publicly associated the action with his apprehensions regarding Arday.

It is still uncertain if the university plans to end Cofnas’ position.
