Poland doesn’t agree with Israel’s choice to end its investigation into the Gaza strike that killed a Polish aid worker

Poland has expressed strong disapproval of Israel’s choice to discontinue its investigation into the 2024 Gaza strike that resulted in the death of Polish aid worker Damian Sobol.

Poland has expressed strong disapproval of Israel’s choice to halt its investigation into the 2024 Gaza strike that resulted in the death of Polish aid worker Damian Sobol.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry expressed its deep disappointment upon receiving information on August 19, 2026, regarding the discontinuation of the investigation into the attack. The ministry summoned Israel’s ambassador in Warsaw to convey its concern regarding the decision.

Sobol, a volunteer from Przemysl in southeastern Poland, was one of seven World Central Kitchen workers who lost their lives when an Israeli airstrike hit their convoy in central Gaza in April 2024.

The attack ignited global outrage and brought fresh examination of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

During the meeting with Israel’s ambassador, Poland’s Foreign Ministry articulated its concerns regarding the actions taken to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The ministry also notified the ambassador that the District Prosecutor’s Office in Przemysl is conducting a separate investigation into the incident.

Warsaw has expressed its expectation that Israel will furnish Polish investigators with the requested explanations and materials necessary for their inquiry.

Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ignacy Niemczycki characterized Israel’s decision as unexpected, emphasizing that Warsaw anticipates accountability when force is misused.

“We anticipate a comprehensive explanation regarding the circumstances surrounding the use of force and believe that any unjustified actions must be appropriately addressed,” Niemczycki stated to Polish public radio PR1 on Friday.

Australia summoned Israel’s ambassador in Canberra following the death of Australian aid worker Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom in the same strike.

The attack in April 2024 resulted in the deaths of all seven World Central Kitchen workers, leading to significant international condemnation. Israel’s military has recognized significant mistakes and shortcomings in its management of the incident.

Israel’s military states that its operations in Gaza are aimed at Hamas militants and has indicated that it looks into certain incidents that result in civilian casualties.

The choice to halt the investigation has heightened diplomatic strains between Poland and Israel, as Polish officials persist in their examination of Sobol’s death.
