Infantino adviser has stepped down as the AFC aligns with UEFA and CONCACAF in their opposition to FIFA’s investment plan

Carlos Cordeiro has stepped down from his role as an adviser to Gianni Infantino following the AFC’s alignment with UEFA and Concacaf in their opposition to FIFA’s investment proposal.

A senior adviser to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Carlo Cordeiro, has resigned following the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) becoming the third confederation to oppose his proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors.

Carlos Cordeiro characterized the plan as “a bad deal for football” and cautioned that it would “mortgage football’s future” prior to resigning from his advisory position.

The AFC declared its support for UEFA and Concacaf, stating that the proposal cannot realistically attain the broad consensus and unity needed to progress.

The confederation emphasized that the strength of the FIFA World Cup is rooted in the involvement of all confederations and prominent football nations, cautioning that any proposal jeopardizing the competition’s unity and universal essence should be reevaluated.

With UEFA’s 55 members, Concacaf’s 35, and the AFC’s 46 all opposing the proposal, 136 of FIFA’s 211 member associations are now united against the plan, significantly exceeding the 106 votes Gianni Infantino suggested would be necessary for approval.
