A 13-year-old lost their life, and two individuals sustained injuries after a section of a fountain fell during the celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory in Ciudad Rodrigo, a city in western Spain, early on Monday.

The incident occurred just after midnight at the Arbol Gordo fountain, where numerous residents had assembled to commemorate Spain’s second World Cup victory. Emergency services reported that the upper section of the monument detached and collapsed onto the crowd.

The incident took place in Ciudad Rodrigo, a medieval walled city with a population of approximately 12,000, located in the Salamanca province near the Portuguese border.

In a statement, Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall expressed condolences to the victim’s family, saying the entire city was mourning the loss.

“What was meant to be a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has transformed into a tragedy,” the statement said.
