India’s ‘Cockroach’ Movement Protests at Parliament Against Education Minister
Thousands of young protesters marched toward India’s parliament, calling for education reforms and the resignation of the education minister.
Thousands of protesters gathered in the heart of New Delhi on Monday, marching towards parliament as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement gained momentum, intensifying calls for comprehensive education reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The demonstration is among the largest organized by the movement since its emergence weeks ago, triggered by repeated examination paper leaks and growing allegations of failures within India’s education system.
A spokesperson for the movement stated that protesters continued to be resolute despite the initial discussions with the government. “The determined protesters will not cease their efforts until their demands are fulfilled!”
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das shared an update on X following a meeting with federal Health Minister JP Nadda.
The Cockroach Janta Party, contrary to what its name suggests, is not an officially registered political party. What started as a satirical campaign has transformed into a widespread youth movement across the nation, calling for increased accountability in India’s education sector.
Supporters are demanding Pradhan’s resignation, alleging that he has not adequately dealt with the ongoing examination scandals impacting thousands of students nationwide.
On Monday, Das revealed that the leaders of the protest had conveyed their demands directly to Nadda.
“We have communicated our demands… which include the immediate resignation or dismissal of Dharmendra Pradhan.”
He stated that the minister assured him of addressing the issues with the relevant authorities yet refrained from making any definitive commitments.
The minister assured us that he will address this matter at the appropriate level. Nevertheless, no commitments have been established to date.
The Indian government has mostly permitted the demonstrations to persist, although Pradhan last month characterized the CJP as the B-team of disruptive elements. He has not yet addressed the protests from Monday.
SAuthorities significantly increased security measures around the protest venue, deploying a substantial presence of police officers and paramilitary personnel throughout central Delhi.Authorities subsequently directed the demonstrators assembled at Jantar Mantar to leave the area as the march continued.
Tensions surrounding the protests intensified over the weekend following the police’s forcible hospitalization of prominent activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk, who had reached the 21st day of a hunger strike in support of the movement.
The CJP adopted the name “cockroach” following a senior judge’s reported use of the term to describe young people, a label that the movement has since embraced as a symbol of resilience and determination.
