Twenty students died in a bus accident in Uganda, and the government has banned all school trips
Twenty schoolchildren died late Thursday night when the bus they were riding in crashed on the way back from a trip to some waterfalls in eastern Uganda.
The government said on Friday that all school trips would not be allowed because of the tragedy, which led to outpourings of sadness and calls for stricter safety rules online.
Police said in a post on X that early findings showed the driver lost control. The bus went off the road and overturned after hitting a big rock.
The King David Junior School in Kampala owned the bus that crashed in Chekwatit village in Kapchorwa district. The bus had just come back from a field trip to Sipi Falls with students.
Officials say that three people and a number of children were hurt, and one adult also died.
Uganda has many car accidents. Experts say that poorly maintained cars and dark streets are to blame.
In October of last year, a bus accident on one of the country’s main roads between the capital and Gulu in the north killed 46 people.
A government news service said on Friday that Education Minister Chrysostom Muyingo had “stopped all school trips and excursions, starting right away and until further notice.”
