Protests have erupted throughout Ukraine in response to President Zelensky’s dismissal of the defense minister.
Protesters are expressing their discontent with President Zelensky’s choice to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov from his position.
Protests have erupted in various Ukrainian cities in response to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s surprising decision to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. This action has drawn criticism from segments of the military, civil society, and political analysts.
Hundreds of demonstrators, predominantly young individuals, assembled in Kyiv, brandishing placards that read “Hands off Fedorov” and “Stop sabotaging victory!” while vocally expressing their discontent with chants of “Shame!”
Zelensky has not provided a public explanation for the decision, leading to extensive discussion regarding the future trajectory of Ukraine’s defense leadership.
At the age of 35, Fedorov was appointed as the defense minister in January and received significant recognition for his efforts in implementing reforms focused on combating corruption, modernizing the ministry, and enhancing battlefield performance through data-driven strategies.
Ukraine’s parliament was anticipated to cast its vote later on Thursday regarding the nomination of Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as his successor.
Analysts have connected Fedorov’s removal to alleged disagreements with Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, while others have proposed that worries regarding the speed of military mobilization reforms might have played a role in the decision.
“This is the gravest error Zelensky has committed throughout his presidency,” remarked a Ukrainian soldier named Oleksandr.
He mentioned that he had enlisted earlier this year due to his belief in Fedorov’s vision for the military, noting that he was aware of very few individuals within the armed forces or the broader society who backed the minister’s removal.
During a protest in central Kyiv, Maria Lavrynets stated that Fedorov’s efforts had bolstered troop morale and enhanced military performance.
“We observe his outcomes. “We recognize the dedication of the soldiers; we must support them,” she stated.
Before taking on the role of defense minister, Fedorov was Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, where he was instrumental in founding the volunteer “IT Army of Ukraine” to carry out cyber operations against Russia in response to the full-scale invasion in 2022.
He subsequently spearheaded the Army of Drones fundraising initiative and implemented systems aimed at incentivizing military units for effectively targeting Russian assets.
As the defense minister, he maintained a focus on drone technology, military innovation, and procurement reforms.
His ministry also played a crucial role in Ukraine’s recent operations aimed at the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula.
Shortly after his dismissal, Fedorov took to Facebook to showcase his accomplishments and committed to furthering Ukraine’s war effort through innovation and organizational reforms.
Prominent Ukrainian blogger Serhii Sternenko referred to Fedorov as “the best minister of defense in our entire history” and expressed criticism regarding what he termed bureaucratic obstacles that impeded more profound reforms.
The fallout also led Pavlo Yelizarov, a senior commander of a Ukrainian drone unit, to resign from his role as deputy commander of the Ukrainian Air Force in protest, calling Fedorov’s removal “a great evil for the country’s defense capability.”
