Trump: The US will increase tariffs on goods going through the Strait of Hormuz by 20%
President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is reinstating a naval blockade on Iran and will receive a 20% reimbursement on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, following Tehran’s assertion that it had closed the crucial waterway. “The Hormuz Strait is OPEN and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. “We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
“The U.S.A. … will be reimbursed at a rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to ensure safety and security in this very volatile section of the world,” he added.

The U.S. president proposed the notion earlier during a phone interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program, indicating that the U.S. would likely control the strait and should receive compensation. “We’re going to maintain control of the strait, and we will probably manage it. We shall take on the role of the protector of the strait. We might call it the strait’s guardian angel. “And we should be reimbursed for that,” he stated during the “Fox & Friends” program.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential passage for global oil supplies, has emerged as a key focal point in the conflict. Iran’s effective blockade of the strait has led to a rise in energy prices and heightened global inflation concerns. “We’re going to be reimbursed, as the other nations are quite affluent. “They’re on our side, and we can’t be expected to do that for nothing,” he said.
Tehran stated on Sunday that it would keep the passage suspended until “stability and calm” were restored, following Saturday’s announcement of the waterway’s closure due to what was termed an unauthorized transit, with permits to be issued thereafter. “We had a deal. It was an agreement reached, and then they shattered it. It always gets broken. We’ve had 10 deals with these people, and so we’re just going to hit them very hard,” Trump stated.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated on Monday that the sole method to restore normal shipping traffic through the strait is to cease U.S. military interventions in the waterway. They cautioned that “continued interference could lead to greater incidents in the global oil and gas sector.
U.S. and Iranian forces engaged in intense missile and drone strikes over the weekend and into Monday, with Tehran claiming it had targeted U.S. military installations throughout the Gulf and maintained the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in an increase in oil prices.
The recent attacks have become much faster and spread over a larger area in just a week, leading to doubts about the temporary U.S.-Iranian agreement made last month to reopen the strait and stop fighting while they negotiate for another 60 days.
