US has halted global visa appointments as Trump escalates the immigration crackdown
US embassies are modifying visa appointment schedules for training as the Trump administration intensifies scrutiny of applicants in the context of broad immigration enforcement.
The administration of President Donald Trump has suspended visa appointments at US embassies and consulates globally as part of a new training initiative for consular officers in the context of a heightened immigration enforcement effort.
A spokesperson for the US State Department announced on Tuesday that the department has initiated a global training program across its diplomatic missions, noting that visa appointments will be modified to facilitate the exercise.
The spokesperson stated that the training aimed to assist consular officers in screening applicants who might rely on US public benefits and to guaranty that visa applications are assessed in a thorough and uniform manner.
However, the State Department did not disclose specifics regarding the nature of the training or the duration of the changes to visa appointments.
The Financial Times previously reported the pause, noting that applicants for immigrant visas who had already been scheduled for interviews at US embassies and consulates received emails informing them of the rescheduling of their appointments.
As stated in the report, the applicants were informed that they would be receiving additional notifications regarding new interview dates.
The development arises as Trump has escalated his immigration enforcement efforts since resuming his position in the White House for a second term, implementing a wide-ranging crackdown that encompasses deportations, visa and green card revocations, along with heightened scrutiny of immigration applications.
The administration has also denied applications based on factors such as the applicants’ political views and their involvement in pro-Palestinian protests opposing Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Trump has justified the measures, stating that the crackdown aims to enhance domestic security.
The administration has encountered legal challenges regarding certain immigration policies.
On Friday, a US judge invalidated a Trump administration policy that halted immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, determining that the measure surpassed Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s legal authority.
Human rights organizations have strongly criticized the administration’s immigration policies, labeling them as discriminatory and asserting that certain measures infringe upon free speech and due process rights.
Rights organizations have cautioned that the ongoing crackdown has fostered a progressively perilous atmosphere for ethnic minorities in the US, raising alarms about racial profiling, especially concerning communities impacted by immigration enforcement.
While Trump campaigned in 2024 with a commitment to halt illegal immigration, his administration has simultaneously implemented measures that have complicated the process of legal immigration.
These involve new and considerably increased fees for applicants pursuing specific work visas, heightening worries among businesses, immigrants, and rights advocates regarding the administration’s overall stance on legal migration.
