Xi Calls for Responsibility Following Factory Blaze That Claims At Least 28 Lives in China’s Shoe Manufacturing Hub

Chinese authorities have detained factory officials as President Xi calls for accountability after a tragic fire that resulted in the loss of at least 28 lives.

At least 28 individuals have lost their lives following a devastating fire that swept through a shoe factory in the south-eastern Chinese city of Jinjiang. President Xi Jinping has demanded a thorough investigation and insisted on bringing those responsible to justice.

The fire erupted at the Huiteng Footwear factory in Fujian province around noon local time on Thursday, trapping workers within the building and releasing thick black smoke into the sky. Jinjiang, recognized as the shoe capital of China, is estimated to manufacture approximately one-fifth of the global sports shoe supply.

President Xi characterized the fire as a tragedy that resulted in significant casualties and stressed the importance of strict accountability for those responsible. He also urged authorities to learn significant lessons from the incident and ensure that stringent and effective safety measures are put in place following a series of industrial accidents across the country.

Approximately 240 individuals were present in the factory when the fire broke out, according to state media. Emergency responders evacuated 213 workers; however, two later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Additionally, 26 others, initially reported missing, were discovered deceased, raising the death toll to a minimum of 28.

According to Chinese state media, over 500 firefighters and rescue personnel were dispatched to combat the fire and search the building for survivors.

Footage released by state news agency Xinhua depicted towering plumes of black smoke enveloping the factory, with several individuals seemingly trapped on the roof as emergency crews fought the flames below.

Initial investigations suggest the fire may have started on the factory’s ground floor, where flammable materials were stored. However, the precise cause is still under investigation.

Authorities have apprehended multiple individuals associated with the factory’s owners and have frozen the company’s bank accounts as investigators persist in scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The incident has brought renewed attention to industrial safety standards in China, where workplace accidents continue to be a significant issue despite ongoing government efforts to enhance enforcement.

China initiated a comprehensive campaign aimed at enhancing fire safety in high-rise structures after a tragic fire incident in multiple Hong Kong apartment buildings in November, which resulted in the loss of 168 lives.
