Zimbabwe defender Divine Lunga has survived a shooting incident in Johannesburg
Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga was unharmed after a gunman fired shots at his vehicle in Johannesburg, according to police reports.
Zimbabwe international and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Divine Lunga, narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt when a gunman fired shots at his vehicle in Johannesburg on Sunday. South African police are currently treating the incident as attempted murder and are conducting an investigation.
Lunga, 31, was driving through the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow with his younger brother on their way to church when an unknown assailant fired at their vehicle, as reported by local media.
Both men made their escape without any injuries.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that authorities have initiated an attempted murder investigation; however, no arrests have been made at this time.
The Citizen, a local publication, reported that the gunman may have confused Lunga for an undercover police officer before opening fire.
Neither Zimbabwe’s football association nor Mamelodi Sundowns provided an immediate comment on the incident.
Zimbabwe’s national team, the Warriors, subsequently shared a photograph of Lunga in a prayer position on social media, accompanied by the message: “In God we trust.”
Lunga has made 21 appearances for Zimbabwe and was included in the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The defender became a part of Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has since contributed to the South African club’s success in securing multiple league titles, including their second African Champions League crown in May.
