UEFA has stated that FIFA’s decision to permit suspended Balogun to participate undermines the integrity of the World Cup
UEFA has expressed that FIFA’s choice to permit the suspended Balogun to participate undermines the credibility of the World Cup and establishes a perilous precedent.
UEFA has criticized FIFA’s decision to permit United States striker Folarin Balogun to participate in the World Cup last-16 match against Belgium despite his automatic suspension. They described the action as “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable,” cautioning that it jeopardizes the integrity of the tournament.
Balogun, who received a red card during the United States’ group-stage win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, was expected to serve a mandatory one-match suspension. However, FIFA decided that the suspension would not take effect right away, allowing the Americans’ leading scorer to participate in the knockout match.
UEFA issued a firm statement asserting that an automatic one-match suspension for a red card “is not a discretionary option” but rather a principle ingrained in the regulations of football. It cautioned that inconsistent application of the rule diminishes the competition’s credibility and sets a precedent for similar cases throughout the tournament.
The Royal Belgian Football Association announced its intention to contest Balogun’s eligibility, while Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot stated that any political influence behind the decision would constitute a breach of football’s fundamental regulations.
The BBC’s US media partner, CBS News, reported that US President Donald Trump spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the suspension prior to the reversal of the decision. Trump later expressed gratitude to FIFA for what he characterized as “rectifying a significant wrong.”
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter stated that football “must never become a playground for political power,” while European Union sports commissioner Glenn Micallef emphasized that sporting decisions should remain free from political influence.
The dispute represents a significant point of contention in the escalating tensions between UEFA and FIFA, which have encountered disagreements on various matters in recentlyncluding FIFA’s management of World Cup referee assignments.
