Serena Williams can’t play in the Wimbledon doubles comeback because of an injury
Serena Williams pulls out of Wimbledon doubles with her sister Venus because of a knee injury, ending their much-anticipated Grand Slam reunion.
Serena Williams withdrew from her planned doubles comeback at Wimbledon with her sister Venus Williams because she hurt her knee. This ended dreams that the two would play at their first Grand Slam together since 2022.
The 44-year-old said on Saturday that she was pulling out because her knee wasn’t ready to play, even though she was working hard to get better in time for the match.
“I am deeply saddened to have to withdraw from doubles.” It was an honor to be able to compete again, and it meant a lot to me to be able to play with Venus again. Even though I did everything I could to get ready, my knee is still not ready to fight.
The Williams sisters, who have won Wimbledon six times in a row, were supposed to play Camila Osorio of Colombia and Solana Sierra of Argentina later on Saturday. Fans were very excited about their return, and Wimbledon moved up the match to give Serena as much time as possible to show that she was fit.
Williams hurt herself after losing to Maya Joint of Australia in three sets in the singles match on Tuesday. Even though she didn’t seem to be in any pain during the match and didn’t need any medical help on the court, her knee reportedly swelled up a lot afterward, which forced her to quit.
Williams posted pictures of her heavily bandaged left knee on social media, along with pictures of syringes that she said were used to drain fluid from the joint.
She also thanked the people who put on Wimbledon for letting her healing happen and thanked her fans for their support during her comeback.
“I thank Jamie Baker, the tournament head, and the rest of the team for giving me a chance to play here.” I can only tell you to stay tuned to a place near you.
Fans were upset because they were looking forward to seeing the famous sisters play together again on a Grand Slam stage. Venus and Serena have won a total of 12 Wimbledon singles titles and six Wimbledon doubles titles together.
Despite her loss, Serena’s return to Grand Slam play after a four-year hiatus was viewed as a positive development. In the singles match against Joint, she showed glimpses of the strong serving, aggressive shot-making, and fierce competitiveness that made her famous, but it’s still unclear whether her body can handle the demands of a long-term comeback.
Williams hasn’t said where she’ll play next, but the US Open, which runs from August 30 to September 13, is the highlight of the North American hard-court season.
