Spain wants payback as Ronaldo’s Portugal looms in the last 16 matchup in Texas

Spain and Portugal on Monday will bring a year’s worth of Iberian rivalry into the Texas heat, as the World Cup round of 16 features a rematch of last year’s Nations League final and a generational clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal.

Portugal triumphed in the final through penalties following a 2-2 draw, thwarting Spain’s efforts to defend their title and secure an additional trophy to the European Championship crown they had won the previous year.

For Luis de la Fuente’s side, it stands as the sole blemish on an otherwise brilliant three-year journey that commenced with the 2023 Nations League title and has now extended to 34 matches without defeat.

Spain, fluid in their play, relentless in taking advantage of opportunities, and stingy defensively, have not allowed a World Cup goal since their group match against Japan at Qatar 2022. However, Portugal presents a formidable challenge, particularly with a midfield featuring Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Bruno Fernandes, who can match Spain’s skilled technicians stride for stride.

In the Nations League final last year, Portugal did not attempt to outshine Spain. They were disciplined, cohesive, and resolute, rejecting the expansive, aggressive strategy that France had previously employed before their defeat by Spain in a nine-goal thriller during the semi-finals.

Nuno Mendes also engaged in a personal duel with Spain’s right side throughout the evening. The Paris St. Germain full back was tested time and again, yet it still managed to summon the energy to thwart Spain and pose a threat in attack.

He is expected to take on a similar double shift on Monday: stifle Lamine’s creativity and push forward whenever Portugal has the opportunity.

FEATURE PERFORMANCE

Lamine continues to be Spain’s standout performer, a teenage winger who plays with the confidence of someone who views pressure as a mere triviality.

However, Spain encompasses much more than just one prodigy.

Their passing patterns are smooth, their attacking movement precise, and their defensive structure has emerged as one of the tournament’s most dependable foundations.

Lamine told reporters after Spain’s 3-0 victory over Austria, “We have no fear of anyone, but we must continue to grow.”

Portugal arrives in a less tranquil state. They faced significant challenges against Croatia to advance to the last 16 and encountered difficulties during the group stage, ultimately finishing second behind Colombia after two draws.

Spain, in contrast, has developed its performance in the tournament after starting with a goalless draw against Cape Verde.

Then there is Ronaldo, remaining present, unwavering, and still commanding attention even as the space he occupies has diminished. The explosive force of the past may have waned, yet he continues to pose a threat within the confines of the box, as Spain found out when he capitalized on a loose ball to equalize at 2-2 in the Nations League final, propelling the match into extra time.

When Ronaldo embarked on his journey to reach 1,000 career goals, Lamine was just a toddler. On Monday, they will face off in a knockout match where one generation might push another towards the exit.
Ronaldo’s sister has stated that he will depart from the national team following the World Cup, indicating that each match for Portugal could potentially be his final one. For two teams that came in as strong contenders for the trophy, an exit in the round of 16 would be a harsh disappointment.
