Armenia’s highest court has dismissed the pro-Russia opposition’s appeal to annul the election outcome
Armenia’s constitutional court on Saturday dismissed a request from the pro-Russian opposition to annul the results of the June parliamentary election, in which Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s pro-Western party was re-elected, according to state news agency Armenpress.
Armenpress reported that the court upheld the result, rejecting an appeal by the Strong Armenia opposition bloc, which received 23.3% of the vote and claimed there were irregularities in the poll.
The ruling Civil Contract party secured nearly 50% of the vote.
Opposition groups expressed concerns regarding a series of arrests prior to the vote, which appeared to target their parliamentary candidates and supporters.
A group of international election observers acknowledged the allegations of vote-buying and other electoral violations, while stating that voting proceeded smoothly in the majority of polling stations.
