Nagelsmann resigns as Germany’s coach after a shocking elimination from the World Cup, and Klopp becomes the favored candidate
Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as the coach of the German national team following their elimination from the World Cup, and reports suggest that Jurgen Klopp is set to take over the position.
Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as head coach of Germany after the team’s unexpected departure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reports indicate that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is ready to assume the role if approached.
Nagelsmann’s departure follows Germany’s elimination by Paraguay in the round of 32, concluding a disappointing World Cup campaign despite finishing at the top of Group E on goal difference.
The 38-year-old engaged in discussions with officials from the German Football Association (DFB) on Thursday following the defeat, leading to his decision to resign.
Sky Germany reports that Klopp is willing to lead the national team if the DFB reaches out. The former Liverpool manager, now serving as head of global soccer for the Red Bull Group, reportedly has a unique exit clause in his contract that would permit him to accept the Germany position.
Nagelsmann took on the role of Germany’s head coach in September 2023 and led the four-time world champions to the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024, where they faced a narrow defeat against the eventual champions, Spain.
Germany’s World Cup journey concluded in a thrilling manner as they fell to Paraguay in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 stalemate that extended into extra time in Boston.
They started the tournament with great momentum, decisively beating World Cup newcomers Curacao 7-1 in their first Group E match, followed by a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. However, a 2-1 loss to Ecuador resulted in them finishing level on points at the top of the group, advancing solely on goal difference.
Speaking right after the loss to Paraguay, Nagelsmann conveyed his desire to continue in his role despite the unsatisfactory outcome. “I am not someone who backs down,” Nagelsmann stated.
“This defeat is not the first occurrence of this situation, and there are aspects of today that require modification.”
The departing coach asserted that he was ready to keep guiding the team, provided the German Football Association maintained its trust in him. However, if the DFB wants me to carry on, I will do so. I understand the intricacies of football, and I am familiar with the workings of the industry.
“I understand that many may wish for my departure, but I would be eager to continue if the football association desires my presence.”
