Danny Glover has announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, revealing that he has been living with the disease for several years
The cherished actor revealed his diagnosis during an interview with Lester Holt on the Today show. Glover, 79, and his family gathered to discuss the significant changes they have experienced since the diagnosis, also sharing the reasons behind the legendary actor’s decision to go public at this time.
“I’m confident that as it progresses, there will be differences and changes,” the Lethal Weapon star remarked.
The Alzheimer’s Association is currently collaborating with Glover, providing guidance to him and the over 7 million Americans aged 65 and older who are living with Alzheimer’s, emphasizing that straightforward actions can contribute to the battle against the disease. Maintaining physical activity, controlling blood pressure and diabetes, and ensuring quality sleep are all essential measures, as stated by the organization.
Since his diagnosis, Glover’s movements, speech, and memories have all slowed, yet he remains actively engaged in his community.
“I could live with it, in a sense,” Glover stated during his appearance on Today.
The star and his family have decided to speak out at this time because they believe their actions can contribute to reducing the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s.
“I believe it’s crucial for him to have ownership of his narrative, of his own life story,” Glover’s daughter, Mandisa, shared with Holt.
That holds significant importance. And the moment is here. What better time than now for him to express his thoughts?
“It’s important because people sometimes ask questions, and I want to be honest rather than say, ‘Oh, yeah, everything is all right.’” “It’s all wonderful,” she added.
In an interview with People, Glover provided a more comprehensive insight into his life with Alzheimer’s. Mandisa shared with the publication at the start of the conversation, “I think he’s aware sometimes and then sometimes not.”
She further mentioned that her dad is prepared to share his diagnosis, highlighting that it is significant for him to be of assistance.
“I don’t feel like it’s the end of my life,” Glover expressed to the outlet. “There is work to be done.”
“I’m still struggling to accept all aspects of it,” he says of his diagnosis. “There are moments you hold onto that affirm your ability to recall things.” There are moments that will remain etched in my memory forever.
In 2022, Glover received the Oscar’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition of his lifelong commitment to charitable work and activism. That same year, Mandisa mentions that she began to observe behavioral changes, which ultimately resulted in his Alzheimer’s diagnosis the following year.
The renowned actor enjoys a robust support system, including his brother Marty, 67, who resides with him.
“We simply want him to experience his best life, just as he allowed us to experience ours,” Marty shared with People.
Mandisa acknowledged that “sure, it’s depressing” for her father, adding, “It’s a change in the core of who you think you are or don’t think you are.” For her, it is quite challenging. You simply need to embrace the day for what it truly is.
Despite his condition, Glover aims to convey that Alzheimer’s is not the conclusion of the journey.
“I still have my daughter; I have friends.” “I just want to say that your life continues,” he stated.
