World Cup celebrations in Mexico City have tragically resulted in the deaths of three individuals

Three individuals lost their lives due to suffocation following a gathering of over one million people in Mexico City to celebrate the country’s World Cup victory against Ecuador.

Mexico City’s World Cup celebrations took a tragic turn on Tuesday, as three individuals lost their lives due to suffocation amidst the massive crowds that filled the streets after the country’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

The victims included a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man, who were part of over one million fans that congregated, primarily near the Angel of Independence monument in downtown Mexico City, to commemorate Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986.

Emergency services attended to three individuals who were found unconscious at various locations along Paseo de la Reforma, as reported by the city’s health authority. Paramedics administered first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to transporting the individuals to the hospital, where all three were subsequently confirmed deceased due to suffocation.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada extended her condolences to the families of the victims and stated that the city would offer support in the days ahead. She also encouraged supporters to celebrate “with responsibility, care, and empathy.”

The celebrations erupted throughout the capital, including at the Estadio Azteca, with fireworks lighting up the sky long after the final whistle. Earlier in the day, Brugada had recommended that fans intending to assemble near the Angel of Independence consider alternative locations due to the large crowds.

Mexico’s victory ensured a spot in the Round of 16, where they may encounter England should the Europeans triumph over DR Congo.
