Ukraine urges the European Union to disburse €6.6 billion from the Peace Fund for military assistance

Ukraine urges the European Union to disburse €6.6bn from its peace fund to enhance military capabilities amid ongoing funding shortfalls.

Ukraine has requested its European Union partners to allocate €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility (EPF) for military assistance, stating that the upcoming six to nine months represent a crucial chance to strengthen its position on the battlefield.

In a letter dated June 26 and reviewed by Reuters, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that Ukraine’s total defense requirement for the year is approximately €136 billion, while the national budget can only cover about €53 billion of that figure.

The minister highlighted that Kyiv is anticipated to receive approximately €28.3 billion for defense this year as part of the European Union’s €90 billion loan program.

Fedorov urged EU member states to allocate the available EPF funds for immediate military support, highlighting the facility as one of Europe’s most effective tools for bolstering Ukraine’s defense initiatives.

He contended that utilizing the €6.6 billion currently would yield the most significant military effect, asserting that prompt assistance would enable Ukraine to capitalize on what he characterized as a vital six- to nine-month window of opportunity on the battlefield.
