DR Congo receives assistance from a Lumumba impersonator

Democratic Republic of Congo superfan Michel Kuka Mboladinga was unable to attend his country’s thrilling World Cup victory against Uzbekistan on Saturday, but an impersonator was more than willing to take his place.

Mboladinga has gained international fame for remaining still in the stands, resembling the statue of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the DR Congo, who is a highly respected figure after his assassination in 1961.

Mboladinga bears a striking resemblance to Lumumba, donning vibrant suits in his country’s colors. However, after backing the Congolese in their recent match in Mexico, he was unable to secure a visa for their crucial game in Atlanta against Uzbekistan, where they triumphed 3-1 to progress to the last 32.

Enock Kabwende, a 28-year-old impersonator, entered the scene, resembling Lumumba yet dressed in a dark suit adorned with leopard print.

I want to keep the culture going,” Kabwende expressed to Reuters, positioned at the highest row of the stadium and momentarily appearing on the massive television screen, which sparked a tremendous cheer from the nearly 69,000-strong audience. He didn’t come here, but we must represent our country.

“Patrice Lumumba embodies liberty, strong power, prosperity, and freedom in our nation,” Kabwende stated.

If the genuine ‘Lumumba Vea’ manages to secure a visa for DR Congo’s upcoming match against England in Atlanta on Wednesday, Kabwende expressed his hope that they could unite on the field. We are family,” he added.
