The 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise is set to commence next Monday, maintaining a scale comparable to previous years. Approximately 18,000 South Korean troops are anticipated to take part, as reported by South Korean military spokesperson Jang Do-young on Monday.
US military spokesperson Ryan Donald stated that the exercise would include realistic threats, drawing on “lessons from recent conflicts,” to enhance the allies’ readiness and capabilities through combined, joint, and all-domain operations.
He highlighted North Korea’s deployment of troops to assist Russia in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine over the past few years.
“Soldiers from the DPRK have been sent to Ukraine and have applied the lessons learned there upon returning to North Korea,” Donald stated, referring to the official name of North Korea.
This development alters the capabilities of the DPRK, and our training reflects that threat.”
Ulchi Freedom Shield is one of the two primary combined military exercises held each year by South Korea and the US, in addition to their spring training.
The US military stated that the exercise encompasses “live, virtual, constructive, and field-based training.”
North Korea has not yet provided a response regarding the planned drills.
Pyongyang has consistently characterized significant US-South Korean military exercises as preparations for an invasion and has reacted to prior drills with weapons tests and assertive rhetoric.
Officials from South Korea and the United States assert that their collaborative exercises are fundamentally defensive.
The announcement follows shortly after South Korea, the US, and Japan identified a short-range ballistic missile launch from North Korea on Thursday.
North Korea conducted its first ballistic weapons test since late June. The missile struck the waters off the nation’s east coast.
South Korea and Japan denounced the launch as a provocative act and a threat, emphasizing that numerous UN Security Council resolutions forbid North Korea from engaging in ballistic missile activities.
The US Pacific Command stated that Washington is dedicated to protecting the US homeland and its allies in the region.
North Korea has intensified its initiatives to enhance its nuclear and missile programs following the collapse of leader Kim Jong Un’s diplomatic engagements with US President Donald Trump in 2019.
Experts suggest that Kim might perceive an expanded weapons arsenal to enhance his leverage and obtain concessions from Washington in upcoming negotiations.
North Korea’s supply of troops and ammunition to Russia has sparked worries in South Korea, the US, and other nations regarding the potential transfer of sensitive military technology from Moscow to Pyongyang.
