Italy has announced the release of Flotilla activists detained in Libya
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Tuesday that two Italian pro-Palestinian campaigners who were detained in Libya have been released after approximately a month in custody.
Last month, Israeli forces apprehended hundreds of individuals aboard numerous vessels in international waters, aiming to prevent Global Sumud Flotilla volunteers from delivering aid supplies to the Gaza Strip.
In a post on social media platform X, Tajani stated that the two Italians had been transferred to Italy’s consul in Benghazi, along with a Uruguayan national who also possesses Italian citizenship.
The individuals detained in Libya belonged to a distinct group of Flotilla activists who attempted to access the Palestinian enclave via land routes.
According to the Global Sumud Flotilla, the activists staged a hunger strike to protest their detention and alleged mistreatment.
Tajani announced their scheduled return to Italy on Wednesday.
