UN Chief Urges AI Companies to Disclose Environmental Effects
The UN urges AI companies to reveal their environmental impact, encompassing energy and water consumption, and to pledge to utilize renewable-powered data centers by 2030.
The United Nations has urged leading AI companies to enhance transparency regarding the environmental impacts of their swiftly growing data centers, cautioning that the increasing demand for electricity and water in this sector could seriously jeopardize global climate objectives.
During London Climate Action Week, Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the necessity for a clearer understanding of the resources utilized by AI infrastructure, especially as the technology grows at an extraordinary rate.
He observed that by the decade’s conclusion, data centers powering AI systems might use more electricity than almost every nation globally and demand significant amounts of water, further intensifying the strain on already limited resources.
In response to these concerns, Guterres introduced the United Nations’ AI Environmental Transparency Initiative, aimed at motivating technology companies to disclose the environmental impacts of their operations, such as carbon emissions, water usage, and land utilization.
He urged the industry to guarantee that all AI-related data centers function solely on renewable energy by 2030, contending that innovation should not compromise environmental sustainability.
According to the UN chief, artificial intelligence has the potential to address global challenges; however, companies need to be open about the environmental costs linked to the development and implementation of this technology.
Numerous technology companies have committed to lowering emissions and enhancing their reliance on clean energy. However, some are still investigating alternative power sources, such as natural gas and nuclear energy, to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity.
Guterres cautioned that global initiatives to curb climate change are still inadequate and condemned suggestions that promote increased dependence on fossil fuels.
He emphasized that speeding up investment in renewable energy projects and enhancing electrification throughout transportation, buildings, and industrial sectors continue to be some of the most effective approaches for lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
The UN Secretary-General has initiated a new appeal focused on reducing methane emissions, urging oil and gas companies to address leaks, stop routine gas flaring, and implement globally recognized scientific standards for monitoring emission levels.
He described methane as a significant contributor to climate change, emphasizing that reducing emissions from the fossil fuel sector would be crucial in mitigating global warming.
Guterres also revealed intentions to gather world leaders in September prior to the COP31 climate summit in Turkey, where the focus will be on expediting a fair and orderly shift away from reliance on fossil fuels.
