Dame Dash released a diss aimed at JAY-Z and Cam’ron, but instead faced significant backlash
The Roc-A-Fella cofounder directed his remarks at his former partners, yet the internet and Cam’ron transformed it into a source of humor.
Dame Dash attempted to retaliate against JAY-Z and Cam’ron with a diss track, but it quickly backfired on him. On June 15, the Roc-A-Fella cofounder took to Instagram to tease a track titled “Cheap Teeth,” and rather than delivering a hit, he provided the internet with its latest punchline.
The preview of “Cheap Teeth” showcased Dash rapping from the rear of a Sprinter van with his artist Nicky Licky, whom he has compared to Aaliyah. The focus was more on bodily insults than on lyrical content. Nicky Licky began with a jab at JAY-Z, rapping, “I’m sorry this is elder abuse, but somebody needs a spanking, and I’m thinking it’s you,” before addressing Cam’ron with, “Who the f*** disrespects their OG? the motherf***er helped you, and he helped me.” Dash took on the hook with enthusiasm, joyfully singing about his former partners’ breath and referring to it as “cinnamon doo-doo.” He referred to the clip as a “sneak peek” and described it as “too basic, too easy.”
The song was not created in isolation. “Cheap Teeth” serves as Dash’s response to JAY-Z’s freestyle at the 2026 Roots Picnic, where Hov delivered an a cappella verse perceived as directed at Dame, referring to him as a “chatty patty down on his luck again” and making light of his dental issues. That teeth reference originates from a well-documented moment in 2024 when Dash’s teeth unexpectedly fell out during an Instagram Live. Dash reacted to the comments made at the Roots Picnic by expressing his opinion that JAY-Z’s “rap was bad” and subsequently transformed that very criticism into the title of his album.
The responses to “Cheap Teeth” were harsh, with the most notable coming from Cam’ron. The Harlem rapper and It Is What It Is host commented, “All jokes aside, I really have secondhand embarrassment.” The situation is unfortunate. I apologize to everyone for how he has turned out. We will conduct a case study to examine what occurred with him. The line traversed timelines in mere hours, swiftly becoming the hallmark response, with the majority of the discourse focusing on the mockery rather than the music itself.
Cam’ron and Dash have been exchanging barbs for some time now. Recently, Cam referred to their exchanges as “fun” and reminded Dash that his “teeth fell out on TV,” a comment that Dash did not appreciate. In a Ghetto Runways interview, Dash expressed his excitement, stating that now that he has his teeth back following what he described as a laborious operation, he can finally curse with confidence. “Now that I’ve got my teeth back, I can clearly say f*** you,” he declared, before daring Cam to a teeth battle and repeatedly referring to him as “Fredo,” a Godfather reference intended to portray Cam as weak and disloyal. Dash has also teased Cam about his large teeth and made jokes about his fashion choices, comparing him to old school Steve Harvey.
To grasp why all of this resonates so profoundly, one must return to the origin. Dash co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records in 1996 with JAY-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, establishing one of the most significant labels in hip-hop and playing a crucial role in propelling JAY-Z to superstardom. The empire splintered due to financial disputes, power struggles, and differing visions, leading to the sale of the label to Def Jam in 2004. This transition left lingering resentments that Dash has expressed publicly for years. Cam’ron, who gained prominence with Dipset under the Roc-A-Fella umbrella, has since established his own niche as a sports and culture commentator. This is part of why his “Cheap Teeth” dismissal was particularly painful coming from within the family tree.
At this moment, the scoreboard does not favor Dash. “Cheap Teeth” achieved one notable outcome: it garnered attention, yet most of that attention was met with ridicule. The straightforward rhythm, the van backdrop, and the emphasis on breathing and dental jabs imparted a nearly humorous quality to the track, which critics argued was detrimental to his performance. It remains uncertain whether JAY-Z or Cam’ron will provide a genuine response, and considering the way the rollout unfolded, they might not see it as necessary. In a clash fueled by rivalry, Dame Dash took a bold swing with “Cheap Teeth” but ended up damaging his own reputation instead.
