Nikkei reports that a Nissan company in the UK has canceled its plans to make electric vehicle powertrains

The Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday that Nissan Motor Company’s JATCO has canceled its plan to make electric vehicle (EV) powertrains in Sunderland, Britain. This is because demand for Nissan’s EVs in Europe has been slow.

In January 2025, JATCO said it would spend up to 65.39 million pounds (48.7 million pounds) to build up to 340,000 EV powertrains a year for Nissan at a plant in Sunderland. These powertrains will include the electric motor, inverter, and reduction gear.

Later that same year, though, Nissan said it would cut the number of car plants it has from 17 to 10 and review its powertrain factories because sales in the U.S. and China have been bad.

No one at Nissan was available for comment right away outside of normal business hours, and a question sent through JATCO’s website has not yet been answered.
