Lizzo says she started her Instagram as a food blog when she wasn’t making any money before she won a Grammy
The Grammy-winning star talked about her first job before “Truth Hurts” changed everything.
Lizzo just made her fans laugh while reminding them that she was just like everyone else before her sold-out shows, Grammy wins, and dominance of the charts. Thursday, the singer replied to a post going viral about her Instagram handle, “lizzobeeating,” and said that the page started out as a food blog when she was having a difficult time financially.
Lizzo wrote, “Fun fact: I started my Instagram as a food blog when I was broke so I could eat for free. But then my music took off.”
Someone else had joked, “Just found out Lizzo’s Instagram name is Lizzo Be Eating and not Lizzo Be Beating.” This joke led to the tweet.
Honestly, the story behind the name enhances its appeal even further.
With a smiling face emoji, Lizzo tweeted about starting an Instagram food blog. The Instagram account ‘lizzo be eating’ has 3,539 posts and 11.3M followers, as shown below.
From Free Food to Big Fame
Lizzo built her social media following around food and local businesses long before she became a worldwide star. That time, she was still working hard in the underground music scene, even though she had just moved from Houston to Minneapolis to make music her full-time job. Several biographies say that Lizzo spent years working on her sound in smaller settings while having money problems and putting out solo albums.
That drive to work hard became part of her attraction over time. Fans liked how honest, witty, and sure of herself she was online long before she became famous in a big way.
It’s amusing that the Instagram page, initially created to seek free meals, eventually transformed into one of the most renowned music star accounts.

Everything changed when “Truth Hurts” came out.
Lizzo’s big break came with the song “Truth Hurts,” which came out in 2017 and became a giant hit two years later. Lizzo became one of the biggest stars in music when her song got to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her 2019 album “Cuz I Love You” catapulted her into the heart of pop culture, garnering both critical and commercial acclaim. With eight votes, Lizzo led the pack at the 2020 Grammys. Her song “Truth Hurts” won Best Pop Solo Performance, as well as Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Later, she reached another important career milestone when her song “About Damn Time” won Record of the Year at the 2023 Grammys. She was the first Black woman to win this award since Whitney Houston in 1994.
Fans Really Love This Social Media Origin Story
What sets Lizzo’s discovery apart is its authenticity. Many creative people made a living by blogging about food, reviewing it, and forming partnerships on social media before influencer culture turned into a full-on business.
Lizzo turned that side job into a business that won her a Grammy.
At some point, “lizzobeeating” turned into one of the funniest celebrity handles on the web by chance.
