Zimbabwe ferry disaster ends with 15 people who died and dozens who are missing after Lake Kariba flooded
A ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals and leaving at least 27 others unaccounted for as rescue operations are ongoing.
Fifteen individuals have lost their lives following the capsizing of a passenger ferry on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe on Tuesday. At least 27 others, including young children, remain unaccounted for.
A local official informed the state-owned The Herald newspaper reported that 15 bodies had been recovered as rescue teams continued their search of the lake for passengers who are still unaccounted for.
Authorities reported that the ferry was transporting 90 passengers along with five crew members when it capsized on Lake Kariba. Authorities had not promptly released numbers regarding those rescued or confirmed whether all passengers had been accounted for.
However, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation reported a local official stating that 114 tickets had been issued for the journey. The figure indicates that a greater number of individuals may have been on the vessel than the police reported.
The conflicting figures have prompted inquiries regarding the total number of individuals on board at the time of the ferry’s capsizing and the current count of those still unaccounted for.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities strive to locate those who remain unaccounted for and to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the disaster.
A police spokesperson had yet to respond to requests for comment on Wednesday as recovery efforts were ongoing.
