FIFA is seriously looking into a 64-team system for the 2030 World Cup
Several European news outlets claimed that FIFA is getting closer to a historic decision to make the World Cup bigger. This comes after FIFA employees said they wanted a 64-team tournament. The governing body will already change the model of the World Cup to include 48 teams in 2026, but FIFA officials now seem ready to go even further before the 2030 tournament, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Reports from Spain say that CONMEBOL strongly supports the idea and has recently persuaded several other confederations to do the same.
FIFA wants more countries to be able to play in the event.
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is said to want to let more countries play in the event and raise the profile of smaller football nations on the world stage. Reports say that the fact that teams like Cape Verde and Jordan might be able to play in the next World Cup has encouraged FIFA officials to keep adding more teams to the tournament. People who support the project think that a bigger game would make football’s biggest event more diverse, welcoming, and global.
Reports say that FIFA will start official talks about how to run the 2030 World Cup after the current event is over. Along with the possible growth project, officials will also discuss which stadiums to choose in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
But people are still not sure about the idea. Some people think that a 64-team format could make the tournament less competitive overall by letting too many smaller countries enter.
