Rashee Rice’s Second Chance Slips Away: A THC test puts a Chiefs wide receiver in jail and threatens his criminal record

Rashee Rice, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, was booked into Dallas County Jail on Tuesday afternoon after testing positive for THC. This meant that he immediately began serving a 30-day jail sentence, which had been postponed due to an accident in 2024. He will likely be freed on June 16.

The 30-day term wasn’t new; it was part of a deal Rice made in July 2025 when he admitted to two third-degree felonies: wrecking a car that hurt someone seriously and racing on a highway that hurt someone. As part of the deal, Rice was put on deferred adjudication probation for five years. Successfully completing his probation without any issues would have resulted in the removal of the felony charges from his record. Testing positive for THC led to the jail sentence and now puts that delayed judgment at enormous risk.

The main event happened in March 2024, when Rice caused a multi-car accident on a Dallas highway while driving recklessly at speeds close to 120 mph. Before the police came, he left the scene of the accident. A few weeks later, he said in a public statement that he was responsible for them. The crash on U.S. 75 injured four people, and Rice received a bill exceeding $115,000 for their hospital expenses.

Because Rice broke the NFL’s rules about personal behavior, he was already suspended for the first six games of the 2025 season. When asked about what happened on Tuesday, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy only said, “We are aware of the report and will decline to comment further at this time.”

Rice is also being sued in two other lawsuits. The first is from the crash and is set to go to trial on June 9. The second is from Rice’s ex-partner Dacoda Jones, who wants more than $1 million in damages and says Rice abused her physically over and over again.

In the last year of his rookie deal, Rice will miss Kansas City (State of Missouri)’s OTAs and required minicamp because he has to stay in jail. The Chiefs haven’t said anything yet.
