Mourinho ‘Confirms’ Return to Real Madrid Following Unbeaten Season with Benfica
Mourinho has “agreed” to return to Real Madrid after leading Benfica through an unbeaten domestic campaign, even though they fell short of clinching the league title.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Jose Mourinho has reached an agreement to return to Real Madrid.
The anticipated move has been on the horizon for a while, as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reported to favor Mourinho as his top selection.
Romano stated that personal terms have been discussed and are expected to be finalized this week.
Mourinho has recently finished a flawless domestic season with Benfica. The Portuguese club concluded the campaign with a 3-1 victory against Estoril Praia on Saturday.
Benfica achieved 23 victories and secured 11 draws in a total of 34 league matches. Although the club maintained an unbeaten record, they concluded the season in third place in the Primeira Liga standings with a total of 80 points.
FC Porto clinched the title with a total of 88 points, whereas Sporting CP ended in second place with 82 points.
A unique occurrence unfolded as a team finished an entire league season without a single loss yet still fell short of claiming the title.
Benfica did not qualify for the Champions League and will participate in the Europa League next season instead.
Florentino Perez has allegedly not communicated directly with Mourinho, but has engaged in discussions with Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
A provision in Mourinho’s two-year contract with Benfica, which was signed eight months prior, permits him to depart for £2.6m. Mourinho is believed to have additional options at his disposal.
