President Museveni of Uganda was sworn in for a seventh term
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was sworn in on Tuesday for a seventh term, prolonging his leadership in the East African nation for a fifth decade.
The 81-year-old former guerrilla leader was announced as the victor of a January election, securing 72% of the vote, despite a contest overshadowed by violent incidents and claims of fraud.
In his inaugural speech, Museveni highlighted his economic achievements since assuming power in 1986. The economy is poised for double-digit growth in the upcoming fiscal year as crude oil production commences.
There has been increasing speculation regarding Museveni’s plans for succession. It is commonly thought that he prefers his son, military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as his successor, despite his denials of preparing Kainerugaba for the position.
Pop star Bobi Wine, who finished runner-up to Museveni in the last two elections, is currently in exile in the United States after escaping a military raid on his home following the vote.
